Audrie & Daisy Documentary Opt-Out

All Sioux City Community School District students in 9th grade and mentor students from the Mentors in Violence Prevention program will be shown the documentary Audrie & Daisy in the fall.

After watching the movie, students will participate in professionally facilitated small group discussions to develop a deeper understanding of the sensitive content covered in the film.

Audrie & Daisy is a feature-length film that covers the stories of high school students Audrie Pott and Daisy Coleman. Both Audrie and Daisy were sexually assaulted while intoxicated and unconscious, by boys they knew and trusted. In the aftermath, both girls discovered the crimes were documented on cell phones, they were harassed on social media, and both attempted to take their own lives.

The film examines the ripple effects on families, friends, schools, and communities when two young women are victims of sexual assault and find that these crimes against them have been caught on camera. The documentary also takes a hard look at American teenagers who are coming of age in this new world of social media bullying.

We feel very fortunate to offer our students the opportunity to watch the documentary and then engage in these meaningful conversations. Unfortunately, this topic is becoming all too common for our youth. If, for any reason, you do not want your child to watch the documentary, please complete this form by September 15, 2019.

My signature below states: I do not want my child/children shown the documentary Audrie & Daisy in the fall. I understand that this refusal of consent needs to be received by the school system no later than September 15, 2019.
